Future Projects

Sri Somanatha Gurukulam

The Mission

The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven." Taming the mind to ensure emotional equanimity and composed conduct is an important part of education. Sadly, modern education is woefully wanting in imparting such education. Scholastic system sans values and pedagogic practices skewed more toward concepts rather than character building have spawned deleterious and destructive youth behaviors – violence, dishonesty, drug abuse, sexual promiscuity and so on.

That’s precisely what has prompted Sri Somanatha Maharishi to take up the cause of enabling the children grow into responsible citizens with mental equanimity, moral rectitude and model conduct. Sri Somanatha Maharishi has taken upon himself the task of moulding the children into conscientious, courageous, and compassionate men to lead and serve the society at large.

The Manifestation

Sri Somanatha Maharishi’s misson is being manifest in Sri Somanatha Gurukula Vidyalayam – a stately structure fast coming up contiguous to the divine abode of the Swamiji, Sri somanatha Kshetram, at the serene suburbs of Vanasthalipuram in Hyderabad. Modeled on the Gurukula tradition and made up with facilities par excellence, Sri Somanatha Gurukula Vidyalayam is committed to laying the foundations for a moral society through ethical education. While providing education as per contemporary curricula, the Gurukulam seeks to infuse in the children the core ethical values – respect, responsibility, honesty, diligence, selfcontrol, caring and courage. Coming up on a sprawling and lush area, the Gurukulam is being provided with world-class library, laboratories, computer centre and sporting facilities.

The Mano Yoga

A remarkable feature of Sri Somanatha Gurukula Vidyalayam is Mano Yoga Sadhana – a technique for training the mind perfected by Sri Somanatha Maharishi after an arduous penance of over 30 years and steadily gaining popularity wide across the world. Manoyoga Sadhana enables the practiotioner effectively absolve the mind, intellect and the senses of all the evils and ensures them everlasting health, happiness and peace. That over 300,000 children have learned Manoyoga Sadhana along with their educational programs is a testimony to the power and postitive effects of the technique.

It’s a yagna. It calls for intentional focussed efforts by all – families, faith organizations, business houses, government and the media – to foster the character development of the young. We beseech their active participation and support in our endeavors to build a moral society founded on education rooted in Indian ethos.

Students undergoing Manoyoga practice

Swamiji launched this special program which is very close to his heart in June 2000 with the prime objective of training students in Manoyoga. In this way, Manoyoga practice gets imbibed into their daily routine and is expected to give them good health and growth, enhancement of memory and concentration leading to improved academic performance and enabling them to develop into the better citizens of the world.

Ashram staff, with help of 30 medical experts and school authorities, selected 511 students, carried out initial and final health check-up after imparting Manoyoga training for 5 months.

The results observed in academic improvements (increase in no. passes and marks obtained) and improvements in health parameters are shown in the following table:

1. % increase in passes and marks
2. Weight gain
3. Reduction in disease prevalence

This is an on-going and highly focussed projects and at reaching out to a million students in the next 5 to 7 years, necessary administrative approvalms are in place.

1. Establishment of Sri Somanatha International School:
This school will be set up in the tradition of Vedic Gurukulam to synergize formal education with Manoyoga practice and imbibe character, higher intelligence and memory and discriminating power among young students so that they will turn out as responsible leaders and truly global citizens.

The cost of the project is estimated as Rs. 850 lakhs ($ 1,900,000). A 50 acres extant of land situated 50 km from Hyderabad has been purchased and construction work will be taken up shortly.

2. Sri Somanatha Annapurnalayam:
This program is aimed at providing free meals at the Ashram and eventually at some major branches to the devotees and the poor. Initially the project is being implemented at the ashram with a capital cost of Rs. 2 millions(US$45,000).

3. Sri Somanatha Hospitals, Cancer & AIDS Research/Relief Project:
This project involves setting up a hospital and clinic for providing health and medical services to the underprivileged on no-profit basis and to conduct research on the efficacy of Manoyoga in moderating/curing Cancer & AIDS. As Manoyoga has been found to be very effective in curing/moderating many difficult diseases, it is anticipated that it could be beneficial for Cancer / AIDS patients as well.

4. Research Project on efficacy of Manoyoga to enable normal functionality in persons working in low oxygen – environments:
Persons who are required to work in low oxygen – environments for long hours such as air crew, mining workers, traffic police in highly polluted cities and travelers to outer space are subjected to fatigue much faster. Their body functions and memory also may be affected to some degree due to depletion of pranic(life) force. Since Manoyoga offers man ability to harness Nature’s Power (cosmic energy), it is expected to keep such persons in good health and vigor in spite of the debilitating effects of such work environment. This will be the research topic to establish medically the efficacy of Manoyoga.
